چکیده

T paper examines demand elasticities using an integrated framework proposed by Hanemann [Hanemann, M. W. 1984. Discrete/continuous models of consumer demand. Econometrica 52(3) 541–561], which models the incidence, brand choice, and quantity decisions of a consumer as an outcome of her utility maximization subject to budget constraints. Although the Hanemann framework has been the mainstay of earlier efforts to examine these decisions jointly, empirical researchers who have used the it to study purchase behavior have often found that the quantity elasticities are around −1, regardless of the brand or category. We attempt to uncover the underlying reasons for this finding and propose approaches to get as close to the “true” quantity elasticities as possible. We do this by (i) analytically demonstrating how assumptions on the distribution of the brand-specific econometrician’s errors imply certain restrictions that in turn force quantity elasticities to −1, (ii) discussing how these restrictions can be alleviated by considering a suitable specification of unobserved parameter heterogeneity, and (iii) using scanner data to empirically illustrate the impact of the restrictions on quantity elasticities and the relative efficacy of multiple specifications of unobserved heterogeneity in easing those restrictions. We find that the specification of unobserved heterogeneity crucially influences estimates of quantity elasticities and that the mixture normal specification outperforms the alternatives.

Estimation and Analysis of Energy Price Elasticities of Iranian provinces: The Augmented Mean Group Estimator Approach

In the literature on energy economics, estimating and analyzing price elasticities of energy demand is one of the important issues in examining the effectiveness of pricing modalities for energy conservatin and environmental policy follow-up. In this regard, low price elasticities of energy demand will increase the need for non-price policies to change consumer behavior and stimulate energy sav...

Demand for Medical Care in Urban Areas of Iran : An Empirical Investigation

The purpose of this paper is to empirically investigate the factors affecting demand for medical care in Iran the population for this study relates to the Medical Care Insurance Organization of Iran. For the sake of conducting the analysis a sample of 4260 individuals are chosen using a fuzzy sampling procedure. The data was then analyzed using a multinomial logit model. The results show that p...

Total Electricity Demand Modeling: An Application of Spatial Panel Econometric Method

This paper aims to model total electricity demand (incremental) in order to estimate price and income elasticities using provincial data and the spatial panel data method. Electricity demand at the province level is influenced by climatic zones, which can be divided into temperate, cold and sub-tropical. This paper uses time series data for electricity demand in Iran’s 28 provinces, taking into...

Global Regularity and Flexibility of Demand Systems in the Presence of Non-negativity Constraints: a Theoretical and Empirical Analysis

A vexing challenge when using the utility-maximization framework to estimate consumers’ decisions on which set of goods to purchase and how much quantity to buy, is obtaining a functional form of the utility that satisfies three criteria: tractability, flexibility and global-regularity. Flexibility refers to the ability of utility function to impose minimal prior restrictions on demand elastici...

Establishing an Argument-Based Validity Approach for a Low-Stake Test of Collocational Behavior

Most of the validation studies conducted across varying test application contexts are usually framed within the traditional conceptualization of validity and therefore lack a comprehensive framework to focus on test score interpretations and test score use. This study aimed at developing and validating a collocational behavior test (CBT), drawing on Kane's argument-based approach to validity. F...
